Modeled after its parent workshop, the very first Macondo Young Writers’ Workshop seeks socially engaged youth writers working to advance creativity, foster generosity, and serve community. Currently, we are accepting applications from high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who view their work and talents as part of a larger task of community-building and non-violent social change. For the 2016 workshops, Macondistas, Joe Jimenez author of The Possibilities of Mud, will lead a multi-genre workshop for young writers and Jimmy Mendiola, San Antonio filmmaker, will lead a screenwriting workshop for youth.
More on Joe Jimenez: Joe Jiménez is the author of The Possibilities of Mud (Kórima 2014) and Bloodline (Arte Publico 2016). Jiménez is the recipient of the University of Notre Dame’s Institute of Latino Studies 2016 Letras Latinas/ Red Hen Press Poetry Prize. He lives in San Antonio, Texas, where he teaches at Thomas Jefferson High School and is a member of the Macondo Writing Workshops. For more information, visit joejimenez.net.
More on Jimmy Mendiola: is an independent filmmaker, curator, and writer. A Rockefeller Intercultural Media Fellow, Mendiola’s films have screened in film festivals, museums, and colleges in the U.S., Mexico and Europe. His projects have been supported by ITVS, Film Independent, Mun2, and the Sundance Filmmakers Lab, among others. Mendiola created the film program at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and has programmed for multiple festivals and galleries. He sits on the board of the National Association of Independent Filmmakers. Mendiola is currently an artist-in-residence at CMAS where he is working on a project to create a digital archive on the history of U.S. Chicano/Latino independent filmmaking.
